How We Feel About Ourselves and Our World
In Caroline Myss’s work with archetypes called Sacred Contracts, we learn that all of us come into and travel through this life with a unique set of twelve archetypes. These archetypes determine our patterns of behavior, what we came here to do in this lifetime, and what motivates our actions and choices.
Although the combination of the twelve archetypes we have and their placement in our Sacred Contract is a unique map to our soul, there are four archetypes that we ALL have in common. These are called the survivor archetypes.
Each of us embodies these four essential, survivor archetypes from birth to death: Victim, Saboteur, Prostitute and Child. They are the foundation of what it means to be human and help us understand our shared humanity. Caroline Myss describes them as “the four legs of a table” that make up how we feel about ourselves and our world.
The Light and The Shadow
All archetypes have a light and a shadow aspect. Even with a name like “saboteur,” this archetype is not just a “bad” archetype that only causes trouble. In the light aspect, the saboteur is called our Guardian of Choice that helps us move towards empowerment and overcome fear of success.
When we are acting in the light aspect, in the conscious power, of the survivor archetypes we feel good about who we are and our place in the world. Our concerns about safety are taken care of and we are free to learn and grow beyond the basics of life. It is similar to when we have more than enough money to cover our basic needs and expenses, then we start to feel a comfort and freedom that allows us to expand our view of what we’ll accomplish in this lifetime.
When we are acting in the shadow aspect of the survivor archetypes, we don’t feel good about who we are and we are fearful of the outside world. We become caught up in worries over safety and security. We trouble ourselves with what other people think and we lose track of ourselves. We are simply getting by one day at a time.
The Importance of the Survivors
So often when we first discover the concept of a Sacred Contract and the twelve archetypes we are excited to figure out which archetypes are unique to us. When we find out that there are four archetypes as the default and eight that are our own, we say, “Well okay, so I only have eight to choose. I better get after that.”
The problem is that since the survivor archetypes are a given, we take them for granted and don’t invest the time to learn about them.
In learning about the survivor archetypes, we have a chance to come out of the shadow and stop playing the victim, sabotaging ourselves, selling out, and being co-dependent. We have the opportunity to learn how to wield great power and form a solid base of security unlike which we’ve never known before.
More About Archetypes from Stacey
In this video, Stacey explains how we get our archetypes and how knowing our archetypes can drastically change the way we live our lives.
What are Archetypes?
Archetypes are universal patterns of power that coordinate how we think and feel. All we have to do is say “angel” or “hermit” and instantly others know what kind of person we are talking about. This is indicative of the amount of power that each archetype contains.
The Greek origin of the word “archetype” comes from the words archē meaning “beginning or original” and typos meaning “pattern, model or type”. Thus an archetype is the original or first pattern from which all others are made of.
